It’s interesting to see how we moviegoers are still attracted to post-apocalyptic movies regardless there are tons of them released so far. Either we really want to see the world crumble or we are just curious to see what it looks like at the end of the world. So, here I have listed the post-apocalyptic movies that you should watch. It includes post-apocalyptic movies caused by natural disasters, zombies, and plague. This list will be updated occasionally.

1. Snowpiercer (2013)




Let’s start with recommended post-apocalyptic movies caused by natural disaster. In Bong Joon-ho's first English movie, the earth froze after an attempt to prevent global warming gone wrong. The rest of humanity wander around the globe on a train.

Snowpiercer emphasizes the deranged humanity after the apocalypse in a narrow, full of cockroaches, hellish and twisted train. The one with power can do whatever they please to the weak. Starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton, Snowpiercer is really worth to watch for post-apocalyptic movie fans.

2. The Road (2009)




Adapted from Cormac McCarthy’s critically acclaimed novel, The Road tells a story about a father and son journey in a post-apocalyptic world where the earth is crumbling and no longer able to support the human race. The Father and The Son is the only human left in a world that is also full of insane cannibalistic humanity.

The cast were doing a great job, especially Viggo Mortensen. Make sure to watch The Road when you are in a good mood because this movie is so bleak and full of tragic moments. If you are looking for a realistic post-apocalyptic movie, The Road might be the answer.

3. Waterworld (1995)




When the polar ice melted, the great flood drowned the world. Human lives as colonies in the unpredictable sea where the earth is like gold. Even though this movie got mixed reviews on the day it’s released, Waterworld did a great job portraying the post-apocalyptic world with a lot of water.

Kevin Costner’s cult classic tells a story about a mutant who is searching for land in a Mad Max-like post-apocalyptic world, except with no wasteland.

4. Survival Family (2016)




When all of the electronics malfunctioned because of mysterious natural phenomenon, Japanese (if not all the people in the world) have to find new ways to live as most of their lives are electronic dependant. They have to face the reality that they are now in a modern stone age.

Survival Family does not focus on deranged humanity in a post-apocalyptic world. Instead, the movie mostly focuses on showing how human have been disconnected from each other because of gadgets, jobs, and their modern lifestyle. Regardless of its sloppy third act, Survival Family is a unique, moving, and funny post-apocalyptic movie. This movie is highly recommended.

5. A Quiet Place (2018)





Now let's move to post-apocalyptic movies caused by aliens and monsters attack. Different and unique compared to its predecessor, A Quiet Place showcase a sound sensitive aliens. To make a sound is punishable with death. With this premise, you can expect that the movie gives so many thrilling scenes in every second.

A Quiet Place is a family drama wrapped with monster thriller movie. It shows how parents try their best to help their kids grow up and protect them from unstoppable deadly creatures.

6. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)





Edge of Tomorrow is set in a world under alien invasion. The difference is that it takes on soldiers perspective. So instead of giving us the spectacles of ruined human civilization, the movie focuses more on the battlefield.

However, Edge of Tomorrow still is a post-apocalyptic movie you should watch because of its unique premise. Like Groundhog Day mixed with the alien invasion movies, every time the protagonist (Tom Cruise) dies, he will wake up on the same day over and over again until he figures out how to defeat the army of aliens.

7. Daybreakers (2009)




This one is a post-apocalyptic movie caused by monsters. At first, it seems that human civilization is still standing tall, but in fact, it is not. The vampire has taken over the world and made human their livestock.

Daybreakers focuses on the dilemma of the protagonist (Ethan Hawke) whether he should choose to help human or vampire as the fresh bloodstock is running out and make the night creatures become more dangerous than ever.

8. Reign of Fire (2002)




Another post-apocalyptic movie caused by monsters, but now it's the mythical beast Dragon that has taken over the world. Reign of Fire is set in the world where dragons fly freely and burn cities into ashes. The human was forced to live in shelters while wondering was earth really made for them.

Starring Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale, Reign of Fire presents the epic battle between human and fire breathing beast for their existence on the planet.

9. Children of Men (2006)




Before directing a family drama like Roma, Alfonso Cuaron had directed a post-apocalyptic movie called Children of Men. Set in 2027, human faces extinction because of infertility virus that the last birth was in 2009.

When the protagonist (Clive Owen) find a pregnant girl, he needs to safe her from the chaos. The movie discusses some issues such as immigration and refugee. Children of Men also has wonderful cinematography that believable enough depicting the world in total chaos.

10. Twelve Monkeys (1995)




Terry Gilliam's movie mixes post-apocalyptic movie with time travel. Bruce Willis is sent to the past to find a cure for a deadly epidemic that has spread in the future. However, when he arrives in the past, he is regarded as crazy.

Also starring Brad Pitt, the movie looks strange and weird in a good way with the convincing ruined town in the background. Twelve Monkeys now is one of cult classics.
